There’s no better test of your knowledge than teaching, and an eager group of Michigan Trout Camp alumni were ready to face that test.
Armed with their rods, accoutrements (many thanks to Scientific Anglers) and excitement, we embarked on our five-day journey of filming Trout Tips: Kids Teaching Kids.

Just two months after camp ended, a group of ten exceptional anglers returned to Grayling at North Branch Outing Club to help film Trout Unlimited and Fly Fishers International’s latest collaboration; an introductory film series aimed at youth, featuring youth. Nowhere felt more appropriate to film than on the Au Sable River, the birthplace of Trout Unlimited. For this community and these campers, fly fishing is their passion.
As we all gathered and made our introductions on the first day, we hosted a casting clinic, ensuring everyone was casting their best. Wanting to highlight the students’ knowledge and expertise, they chose their topic to film and adjusted the script to add in their own voices. After an evening of reviewing, practicing and rehearsing, we were ready to start rolling.
Let’s get filming
Waders on and rods rigged, we snuck out before breakfast to catch the perfect morning light. Each day as the sun rose and segments were filmed, the students settled into being in front of the camera. Lines became more natural, postures more confident and smiles brighter.

At the sun’s peak, filming paused for card games, fly tying and casting competitions. Even in their downtime, the campers would rehearse their lines together, prepping for their next feature.
As the light softened in the afternoon, filming resumed, working until dusk. To celebrate each day, we’d settle down and enjoy a family style meal cooked by volunteers. Over the course of the five days, we filmed 10 different segments, each video highlighting a new topic.
More than just content creators
While the experience filming together was extraordinary, the real joy was reveling in the moments in between with this outstanding group. From night fishing to sharing meals to playing card games, the joy of being in this place together was tangible. Experiencing the camaraderie of these campers reassured me that the community spirit of fly fishing will continue to thrive in the next generation.
Over the next few weeks, we’re excited to share the product of those wonderful five days together in Grayling. Check out Trout Tips: Kids Teaching Kids. This beginner fishing series will teach you everything you need to know to get out on the water.
Many thanks to the Yot Full Circle Foundation, Fly Fishers International, Trout Unlimited, and Michigan Trout Unlimited for making this series possible.
