What: Steelhead Science for Anglers Workshop

Seattle — Ever wonder why some parts of the river hold steelhead and some don’t? Or why some fish swim to the sea and become steelhead and some stay in freshwater to grow up as rainbow trout? Or how many steelhead spawn repeatedly?
Answer all those questions and more as the Wild Steelheaders United and Trout Unlimited host the first ever Wild Steelhead Science Workshop for Anglers, May 9 at the University of Washington in Seattle.
Top fisheries scientists include John McMillan, science director for Trout Unlimiteds Wild Steelhead Initiative, Dr. Tom Quinn, professor of Fisheries Science at the University of Washington, Dr. Barry Berejikian, Fishery Research Biologist, NOAA/NWFSC and Thomas Beuhrens, Fishery Research Scientist with Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. Each will present to the crowd and then be available for questions and discussion.
Steelhead are one of those mysterious creatures that, in my experience as an angler, the more you fish for them, the more questions they bring to mind, McMillan said. Our purpose here is to inform anglers about the state of the science regarding steelhead issues most relevant to their angling opportunity and experience, and to provide an opportunity for anglers to share their insights with, and ask questions of the scientists. We have selected some of the very best scientists to present because they are not only experts on their topic of interest, but also because they are anglers who enjoy fishing for steelhead.
