Spring is coming and so are those days spent along a fishy stretch of a favorite river. Not only is it a great time of year to get outside, it is a wonderful season for passing on the love of fly fishing, trout, and the special places they live. TU chapters across the country are all about the next generation and creating a legacy out of TU’s conservation mission, and spring is the season when it all gets underway. What is your chapter up to this year? A kids’ fishing day? A Trout in the Classroom trout release? A Fly Fishing Merit Badge lesson? The Headwaters Youth program would love to hear all about it, so send us highlights of your best spring youth event: tgranke@tu.org and ftate@tu.org.
And while we are on the subject, here are a few other news items and resources to consider as the season turns and everyone dusts off their gear.
- How to Plan a Youth Event – a recorded training with ideas and tips for chapter leaders.
- Youth Fly Fishing Day such as this one from the Upper Chattahoochee Chapter in Georgia.
- Streamwalk – an easy-to-use tool from the EPA used to assess the health of a stream!
- Streamside Scavenger Hunt – connect with nature by exploring the environment where trout live.
- TIC Release Ideas – Field day activity ideas from the troutintheclassroom.org website.
- Seine for bugs! – a close-up look at insect life in a stream.
And be sure to sign up those young anglers for a TU youth membership. We have special spring rates on the Stream Explorers and TU Teens memberships, so get in touch to find out more: tgranke@tu.org
Spring doesn’t last long so get out there and take a young person with you. Remember: the river is calling..don’t let it go to voicemail!
