This is a real treat. Below, Tim Flagler narrates as Ed Engle ties his Bubble-wing BWO emerger, a pattern based very strictly on an actual baetis mayfly life stage. As Ed describes the fly, it’s essentially an emerging nymph.
Of course, the real treat is watching as Ed ties the fly. A modern fly-fishing legend, Engle is a renowned tier and author and one of fly fishing’s really good guys. It helps, too, that the fly is highly functional this time of year, with some blustery, cloudy spring days still ahead for most of us, and those are the days blue-winged olives like the most.
