The wind is considered by many to be among the biggest challenges fly fishers face on a consistent basis.
And, to some extent, that’s entirely accurate. A strong headwind can turn an otherwise perfect day on the water into something significantly less enjoyable.
But, as you’ll see in the short video above, beating the wind is totally doable, even for novice anglers.
Simon Gawesworth of RIO Products offers two great tips to effectively beat the wind. First, lift your casting arm a bit and increase the angle of your back cast. This will give the forward cast a downward trajectory and help the fly line cut through the wind rather than sending it straight into the wind.
Second, and this one’s easier said than done, perfect your double-haul cast. This technique is more of a mid-level fly-fishing skill, but it’s good to have in your angling repertoire, and it can, indeed, help you beat the wind.
