If there’s one thing I’ve learned in my work with Trout Unlimited Business members, it’s this: “If you want to know about the outfit, you’ve got to know the boss.” I suppose that’s true almost across the board. Organizations, whether they’re multi-nationals or mom-and-pops, tend to reflect the qualities of their leaders. And nowhere is this truer than with Wind River Outdoor Company – Wyoming’s only Gold Level TU Business member. If you want to know something about this outfit, you must know Ron Hansen.
Ron is a Wyoming guy, through and through. He’s from Lander, went to the University of Wyoming. He’s a diehard hunter, angler and a family guy. What’s more, he’s a hardcore TU supporter, a guy who’s been a tremendous ally for us on issues that affect all of us. He’s involved at the chapter, council and national level. He’s flown to Washington to lobby for us. He’s a leader.
He’s a leader in the fly fishing community as well. He’s steadily grown WROC from a small shop that served local needs to a much larger store that’s a destination for anyone fishing the Bighorn River, the Wind River or any number of destinations in the Wind River Mountains. WROC is the only outfitter licensed to guide anglers on the Green River through Seedskadee National Wildlife Refuge. Ron and WROC have been leaders in fishing and in conservation. They’ve supported Trout Unlimited at every level for years.
Now it’s time for us to do the same thing. We have hundreds of TU Business members nationwide. There are pages of listings in TROUT magazine and on www.tu.org. These businesses have supported us with their funds, their time and their social and political capital. It’s time for us to do the same for them. Please take the time to check out their websites. Give them a call. Buy some gear. Book a trip. They were there for us when we needed them. Let’s be there for them this holiday season.
