Stewart Udall said, “There’s not a single person in Arizona who can say the Grand Canyon was a mistake,” and that is still true today. The Grand Canyon is a place worth protecting, which is exactly what TU is working so hard to do.

Trout Unlimited aided Arizona Rep. Raul Grijalva in drafting legislation on a permanent mineral withdrawal encompassing 1 million acres surrounding the Grand Canyon. This bill was introduced, passed through mark-up, and is making its way to the floor for a vote.  

Trout Unlimited needs your help to pass this bill in the House and push for companion legislation in the Senate. We encourage you to contact your representative or senator to let them know how you feel about the Grand Canyon. • The hydrogeology (groundwater flow speed and direction) of the Grand Canyon Region is not well understood (Canyon mine and the Pinenut mine were both expected to be dry and both filled with millions of gallons of contaminated water)
• Uranium Mines have left an expensive and toxic legacy on the Colorado Plateau. (Over $3 Billion in liabilities with the US taxpayer paying for over $1 Billion)
• Mining is not an important component of Northern AZ’s economy (canyon mine only uranium mine in Northern AZ is projected to have 60 jobs at peak) and it threatens tourism and recreation jobs, which generate 18,000 jobs in Northern AZ and over 201,000 in the State.
• Northern Arizona travel and tourism generated $160 million in state and local tax revenue in 2016. Hard rock (uranium) generates $0 royalties because of the 1872 mining act
• There is a glut of uranium on global markets; the current price of uranium is at least $30/lb. below the minimum threshold for economic feasibility.
• The Grand Canyon claims/mines are owned by international companies (92% of the remaining 800 + mining claims within the withdrawal area are owned by Foreign entities, with an additional 2% being a US company with primarily Chinese investors.
• Lees Ferry one of Arizona’s most important trout fisheries is located near the mineral withdrawal.
