About Us

While I’m relatively new to fly fish at the core, I am a craftsman. I spent 13 years in the custom woodwork industry while living in Charleston, SC. I then started a handmade bow tie and necktie company in 2010. I enjoyed the creative outlet this business provided me and the opportunity to work with clients to design the perfect custom ties. By 2016, I was beginning to want to return to my first passion, woodworking.

While fly fishing in Colorado I decided the time was right to try something new. In late 2017, I began work on a prototype net. I admit, the first few nets may have resembled 1970s tennis rackets, but that initial work helped me realize what I wanted to accomplish. After several months refining the net design, I launched Stonefly Nets Jan 1 2018.

For me, fly fishing is a memory created from casting a 3wt bamboo rod on a beautiful stretch of water in the morning sun. That rod belonged to my great-grandmother who passed it on to my father who in turn gave it to me. When I design my nets, it is my hope and goal to help others form such lasting memories.

The design process starts with selecting wood for a handle based not just on colorization but also the grain pattern and depth. Strips of hardwood for the hoops are chosen to compliment and accentuate the handle to create a piece of functional art. Finally, materials are selected to fill knot inclusions in the handle to complete the look. Every net then gets two coats of a proprietary oil rub and is then finished off with five coats of a high quality polyurethane. Overall, my goal is to create a uniquely distinctive yet classic net every time.

What we do

Custom Wood Landing Nets:
Brookie Nets: 10″x 15½” Hoop with an 8″ handle for an overall length of 23″. These are the smallest nets I offer and are great for those who will be fishing smaller streams or lakes. This is a great net if a 10″ to 12″ fish will be a trophy fish for you that day. Not to worry it can easily handle a bigger fish when the time comes.

Backcountry Nets: 11″x 16″ Hoop with an 8″ handle for an overall length of 24″. These are the second smallest nets I offer and are great for those who will be bushwhacking to smaller streams or lakes. This is a great net if a 12″ to 15″ fish will be a trophy fish for you that day.

Small River Nets: 12″x 17″ Hoop with an 9″ handle for an overall length of 26″. This net is bridging the gap between my Backcountry and River Nets. This can easily handle fish in the 17″+ range. This is a great option for someone who fishing larger streams and rivers.

River Net Series: have a 13″x 19″ Hoop with a 15″ or 22½” handle for an overall length of 34″ or 41½”. These net are my midsize nets and come in two handle lengths. I use this net most of the time when I know landing fish in the 18″+ range will be the norm for the day. These nets are great for river wade fishing or from a kayak/belly boat.

Guide Nets: 13″x 19″ Hoop with a 45″ handle for an overall length of 51″. This is the largest net I make and is really for a guide or for use in a boat. This net is almost 51″ so you won’t want to carry and fish with this net. This is a custom order at this time. Perfect for fish in the 18+ range.
