Tying soft-hackle flies or some streamers that require feather fibers to be distributed evenly around the hook can be a challenge, largely because tiers often end up with a larger-and-desired thread head. That’s because it takes more wraps to bind down fibers and get them pointed rearward.
Above, Tim Flagler give us the solution, and it’s pretty simple. Called the “distribution wrap,” it incorporates only a few wraps of the thread, and the feather fibers, as billed, get distributed perfectly around the hook shank for a handsome finished project.
I’ll definitely incorporate this trick the next time I’m tying flies that require rearward-facing feather fibers. Check it out, and see if it doesn’t make things easier for you, too.
